BLM Designated CDT Route
in Southern New Mexico
Coyote Hills

Additional bootheel information (March 2008) :
We drove through the Hachita/Lordsburg area in mid-March 2008 and found that the CDT has apparently been signed up to the crossing of NM SR 113. On the west side of NM SR 113 there are pink ribbons. Maybe someday the BLM will sign the rest of the trail into Lordsburg. This is the third map for the Designated route for the CDT (Continental Divide Trail) between the Crazy Cook Monument on the Mexican border and Silver City, New Mexico. This map covers the trail north of NM SR 9 for about 25 miles through the Coyote Hills, the Brockman Hills and into the Pyramid Mts.
North of NM SR 9, there was no trail blazing/marking all the way to Silver City. We followed the approximate route as drawn on maps by the BLM and CDTA. This section of the trail diverges entirely from the Westcliffe guidebook route.

On this map, the yellow line is the CDT. The "pink" line is the designated route of the CDT where we diverged from it in order to get water from a reservoir tank in a notch in the Brockman Hills. There was water in the tank south of there, but it was contaminated (three dead birds) so we decided to cross the valley to the tank we could see about a mile away. It will probably not be necessary to follow our route normally. (But look before you drink.) As with all the pictures, if you want the "full-size" view, click on it.
Water sources are marked by a blue dot, with an identifying tag to the northeast of the location for each blue dot.
There are a number of potential water sources along this section of trail, some of which had been turned off when we were there. The water was turned off because, as we've been telling people for several years - ALL the water sources out here have been developed to support the cattle. And once the cattle are gone, there is no water and therefore no trail. Because of the drought, the cattle were moved to other ranges (or sold) early this year (2006) and many of the tanks were already turned off. One day we found 4 tanks and three were recently turned off. One note - there is another road between the railroad tracks and NM 113 that wasn't on the BLM map.
